Sometimes days. Often hours. Occasionally less than one. There is no fixed duration, because the badge isn't an award you keep. It's a live label that says "right now, this book is #1 here," and Amazon re-decides "right now" about once an hour.
I run a service that checks authors' Amazon pages every hour and screenshots the badge the moment it appears, so I have something most answers to this question don't: timestamps. Below is what the badge actually did on real books we monitored this summer, why it behaves that way, and what to do about it.
What the badge really is
Amazon's orange #1 Best Seller badge appears on a product page when that book holds the #1 spot in at least one category's bestseller chart. The #1 New Release badge works the same way for the new-release chart, which is only open to books published recently, roughly the last month.
Both charts are built from Amazon's sales rank, which Amazon says is updated hourly. Sales rank is relative: it doesn't measure how many copies you sold, it measures how you did compared with every other book in that category over a recent window that weights the last few hours most heavily. So the badge isn't tied to a sales threshold you cross and keep. Whoever had the strongest recent hour in the category gets it, and that is recomputed all day and all night.
The practical consequence: your badge can disappear because of something a different author did at 3am. You sold the same as you did an hour ago; they sold more. The badge moved. Nobody tells you.
What we actually observed
Our monitor records the moment a badge appears on a tracked book, and it only records a new appearance after the badge has been absent on a previous check. So every extra entry below is a badge that went away and came back. Titles are withheld and identifying details in the screenshot are blurred.
A business book: seven appearances in three days
This one launched in late August into a competitive category. Here is every time the badge came back after having disappeared, in the monitor's clock (UTC):
- Aug 24, 02:24 — badge first seen
- Aug 24, 05:28 — back again gone and returned within about 3 hours
- Aug 25, 01:43 — back again
- Aug 25, 18:57 — back again
- Aug 26, 09:08 — back again
- Aug 26, 21:17 — back again
- Aug 27, 00:20 — back again six losses and six recoveries in about 70 hours
Six times in under three days this author's badge vanished and reappeared. If they had checked the page once a day, they would have seen it on some days and not others and had no idea why. If they had checked once and never again, there's a real chance they'd have caught a gap and concluded they never hit #1 at all.
A cozy mystery: six appearances in seventeen days
A very different pattern. This Kindle title earned a Best Seller badge in mid-July and then kept losing it and winning it back over two and a half weeks:
| Badge returned | Time since previous appearance |
|---|---|
| Jul 17 | first appearance |
| Jul 20 | about 3 days |
| Jul 25 | about 6 days |
| Jul 27 | about 1.5 days |
| Jul 31 | about 4 days |
| Aug 2 | about 3 days |
Each row is a return after at least one hourly check found no badge. How long each stay lasted is not something we recorded until recently; we've since started logging every hourly check so we can publish actual durations, and this page will be updated when there's enough data.
Two books, two rhythms. The business book fought hour by hour against close competitors; the mystery drifted in and out of #1 as its category's leaders traded places over days. Neither author could have predicted when to look.
Why it disappears (and comes back)
Every case we've seen comes down to one of four things.
A competitor had a better hour. This is nearly all of them. Categories deep in the tree can be won with a handful of sales, which also means they can be lost to a handful of sales. A promo, a newsletter send, or a BookBub feature for someone else's book takes the badge for exactly as long as their spike lasts.
Your own sales are lumpy. Launch-day buyers arrive in waves. Between waves, rank decays, and if the gap is wide enough the badge goes with it, then returns on the next wave. This is the flicker pattern in the business book above.
The new-release window closed. The #1 New Release badge has an expiry the Best Seller badge doesn't. When your book ages out of the new-release chart, the badge disappears permanently, no matter how well it's selling. This one does not come back.
You're looking at a different storefront. Badges are computed per marketplace. A book can be #1 on Amazon.co.uk and unranked on Amazon.com at the same moment. Authors sometimes report a badge "disappearing" when they've simply followed a link to a different country's store. Check the domain before you panic.
Why this matters more than it seems
The badge itself is temporary by design, but the claim it supports is permanent. "Amazon #1 Best Seller" on a cover, in a bio, or in a press kit is a line authors use for years. And the only evidence is a screenshot taken while the badge was visible. Amazon publishes no history of who held #1 and when; once the badge is gone, there is nothing to retrieve.
That's the trap. The moment worth documenting is the moment you're least likely to be looking. Launch week is chaotic, the badge often first appears overnight, and it may be gone before you've had coffee.
How to make sure you capture it
If you're doing it manually, do it properly: a full-page screenshot (not a crop) that shows the badge, the category name, your title, and the browser's URL bar with the date visible somewhere on screen. Take one every time you see it, since the first one is rarely the best one. Check right after any promotion lands and again first thing in the morning, because overnight is when badges most often change hands.
If you'd rather not refresh a product page at 2am, this is exactly why I built Screenshot Tracker. It checks your book's page every hour, and the moment a Best Seller or #1 New Release badge appears it emails you the timestamped, full-page screenshot. It caught every one of the appearances in the tables above, most of them in the middle of the night.

Frequently asked questions
How long does the Amazon Best Seller badge last?
There is no fixed duration. The badge is shown while your book is ranked #1 in a category, and Amazon recalculates sales rank roughly every hour. In books we monitor, a badge has stayed up for days but has also disappeared within a single hour. One business book lost and regained its badge six times in under three days.
Why did my Amazon bestseller badge disappear?
Another book outsold yours in that category during the last ranking window, so it took the #1 spot and the badge moved with it. Sales rank is relative, so a quiet hour for you or a strong hour for a competitor is enough. Amazon does not notify you when this happens.
How long does the #1 New Release badge last?
The #1 New Release badge is only available while your book counts as a new release, roughly the first month after publication, and within that window it follows the same hour-by-hour ranking as the Best Seller badge. Once the new-release window closes the badge is gone for good, regardless of sales.
Can I get the bestseller badge back after it disappears?
Yes, if your book returns to #1 in the category. The badge is not a one-time award; it reflects the current ranking. Books we track regularly regain a badge hours or days after losing it, which is also why it is worth capturing every time it appears.
How do I prove my book was an Amazon bestseller?
A timestamped screenshot of the product page showing the badge and the category is the accepted proof. Amazon keeps no public history of who held a badge and when, so if you did not capture it while it was visible there is no way to retrieve it later.
